Josh Lucas, Donna Karan Headline Solving Kids’ Cancer’s Fifth Annual Spring Celebration
Annual Dinner Raises $700,000 to Fund New Treatment Options for Kids
Actor Josh Lucas, served as the evening’s emcee, and later gave a Voice to Childhood Cancer, reading The Monster by Steve Dolling, a father who lost his child to cancer.
Jessica Melore, a two-time cancer survivor and heart transplant recipient, was honored with the “Wings of Hope” award for her courage, commitment and inspiring service to those in need. Melore is an international motivational speaker and public health advocate. Maya Manley co-founder of the Making Headway Foundation received the “Unsung Hero” award. The foundation is dedicated to providing care & comfort to children as well as funding medical research. Maya has volunteered for the last 25 years as an art therapist to help pediatric cancer patients at NYU’s Hassenfeld Children’s Center.
10-year-old DJ Fulano spun tunes for the cocktail and dinner hours; sixth grader James London gave a violin performance with his friend Mariana Knaupp; and singer-songwriter-pianist Peter Cincotti entertained the audience with his hit “The Heart of the City,” and the children’s classic “Rainbow Connection.”
Dr. Kenneth J. Cohen explained the organization’s unique approach in funding innovative clinical trials that bring new treatment options to children who are battling cancer today. Dr. Cohen was followed by a moving video that told the story of the promise of immunotherapy through the life of nine-year-old Emily Whitehead, the first child to receive a type of immunotherapy known as T cell therapy. Emily recently celebrated two years of being cancer free, and received a standing ovation when she later took the stage to say “thank you for your support.” The evening ended with a live research auction led by Sarah Goulet, an auctioneer and the head of communications at Paddle8.
