Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” Annoying or Ear Candy?
Before we get to the question at hand, let’s get some background info on the song and the artist that recorded it.
Carly Rae Jepsen is a 26 year-old Canadian singer-songwriter from British Columbia. Until “Call Me Maybe” her claim to fame was placing third in the Canadian installment of American Idol in 2007. In Summer of 2008, Jepsen released her debut album “Tug Of War” on Fontana Records. The album was only released in Canada.
“Call Me Maybe”, the lead single from her second album “Curiosity” was released in September of 2011. It wasn’t until teen pop singer Justin Bieber and girlfriend and fellow teen sensation Selena Gomez sent out a tweet on how much they loved “Call Me Maybe” to his 21 million followers and her 11 million followers did the song become a viral phenomenon. Within hours the video went from 90 thousand views to over 10 million views on Youtube. The video now has over 80 million views and counting.
Bieber and Gomez loved the song so much, a couple weeks later they and a few friends made a lip-sync video to the song. That video is now at over 35 millions views on Youtube.
There is no question, “Call Me Maybe” is a huge international hit. Besides being No. 1 in her homeland, it’s also No. 1 in USA, United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden and a few others.
