On April 30th, 2012 in the Hell’s Kitchen section of Manhattan the cast members of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 4 got together for a reunion party and crowing ceremony for America’s Next Drag Superstar at the fabulous jam packed XL Nightclub.
Clearly the crowd favorite and front-runner Sharon Needles who discussed being married to his husband and loving how he can handle a drag queen. Needles was looking forward to taking a day off, as he has spent nearly a month away from home touring the country and expressed how much he missed his cat Jasper. Later that evening, Needles addressed the crowd and said “This is the year of the fucking freak, Thank You all for the support, Happy Halloween kids, Hail Satan” the audience of various backgrounds loved it and cheered at the top of their lungs. Unfortunately, a dark cloud hovered over Needles as a news story about alleged racist remarks broke earlier in the day. Sharon’s reply was “…I don’t like being called what I’m not, I like to shock and push buttons in my shows. I am not a racist.” Needles looks forward in touring and meeting her fans throughout the States.
Chad Michaels is a consonant professional and has conducted himself with class throughout the season. In any other year, Michaels would have been a lock for the win. Chad brought Cher realness to the latest installment of Drag Race and although he has not met Cher in person he did mention that he had once performed for her years ago. During that performance in the audience were icon Barbra Streisand and producer David Foster. During our interview he said “I would love to hear from Cher, to hear what she thought, I tried my best not to offend her. Hopefully she will email me or tweet….I also want to spread the love around, meet everyone around the country and hopefully the world. My heart lies on stage, I love to perform live.” You can catch Chad Michaels on Logo’s Drage Race tour this year.
It was lovely to speak to Phi Phi O’Hara, the “Bitch” of season four. While talking to him it became apparent to me that he is an intelligent person who knows what he wants and will do what it takes to get it. He quickly debunked his infamous persona. We spoke briefly about hisportrayal on screen, “…Hey, it’s a character I played, it very competitive among us on the show. We filmed many hours at a time for days, per episode. You only see a little of what happened” and continued to say ,”People don’t know the real Phi Phi, come to one of my shows and see for yourself the real Phil Phi, they would be surprised.” By now, we know Phi Phi O’Hara didn’t win Drag Race and came in third place, he looked flawless that evening and wins my “Best Dressed,” wearing a cream colored dress with what appeared to be menacing gold spike studs throughout the dress but as he pointed out were actually harmless as I had expressed fear as he came forward to hug me.
Latrice Royal, or commonly known as Latrice *MFCKG* Royale was in high spirits and looking forward to future prospects. Not since the early elimination of Pandora Boxx in season two where viewers were shocked by the early exit of the fan favorite was so much outrage openly expressed. He said ” I would’ve loved to been in the final 3, but it didn’t work out that way”. The South Florida native also said, ” I look forward to being part of Logo’s Drag Race tour and meeting fans of the show.” It was revealed later that evening that Latrice had been crowned “Miss Congeniality” during the reunion show much to the cheers of the audience in attendance.
Another shocking moment in season four was the disqualification of Willam Belli in episode eight. Viewers would have to wait 6 weeks to find out the reason. My first question naturally to Willam was, Why were you DG from the show? his reply ” Oh Honey I had an abortion” which had us in stitches. Later that evening it was revealed that Belli had violated the rules and breached the contract by having conjugal visits with his husband. There is a clause barring contestants engaging in unauthorized outside contact.
